    The Engineering Foundation Degree at South Staffordshire College supports you to achieve a qualification in engineering at degree level. This course builds on your current engineering qualifications, skills and experience to support your professional development plans and is available on a full time or part time basis. The Foundation Degree is validated by University of Wolverhampton and delivered at our Hi-Tech Cannock Campus and supports progression directly onto the final year of the BEng degree programme at University of Wolverhampton.

    In year 1 (Level 4), you will be given a full and sound foundation in all aspects of Mechanical Engineering. The modules to be studied will be:

    • Engineering Mathematics
    • Engineering Science
    • Computer Aided Design
    • Mechanical Engineering Principles
    • Engineering Experimentation
    • Industrial Design Project

    In year 2 (level 5) you will delve deeper into a range of aspects of Engineering, building on and developing the skills already taken from Level 4. The modules to be studied will be:

    • Applied Instrumentation and Control
    • Thermodynamic and Fluids
    • Solid Mechanics & FEA
    • Materials Science and Manufacturing
    • Mechanical Engineering Design Project
    • Engineering Management and Quality
  • Required qualifications

    Entry requirements:

    GCSEs at Grade 4 / C + Including Science, Technology or Mathematics

    Plus:

    • A minimum of 64 UCAS Points
    • A Levels DDE / CC preferably including Physics or Mathematics
    • BTEC L3 Extended Diploma or OCR Cambridge L3 Technical Extended Diploma in a Science or Engineering based Subject – Grades MPP
    • BTEC L3 Diploma in a science or Engineering Based subject – Grades MM
    • Access to HE Diploma in a Science or Engineering Based subject

    Alternatively, we can offer places to mature learners with relevant Engineering experience.

  • What skills will I develop?

    The Foundation Degree in Engineering uses a variety of study materials and has the following elements:

    • studying with a mixture of printed and online material
    • face-to-face tutorials/day release/workshops and/or online tutorials
    • using mathematical and scientific expressions, notations, and associated techniques
    • working in a group with other like-minded students
    • working within our multi-million-pound state of the art engineering workshops and laboratories
    • working with specialist reading material
    • using specialist software (for example AutoCAD, Solid Works, FESTO and 3D printing)
    • continuous and end-of-module assessment in the form of essays, short answer questions, and in some cases an examination
  • Careers

    On completion of the foundation degree, you will be able to progress onto the final year of the degree programme with the University of Wolverhampton.

  • Work experience

    Work based learning forms an integral and essential part of this course and as such you will have the opportunity to take on at least 30 Days of Industry based experience throughout your time on this programme. At level 4 (Year 1) you will complete up to 15 days of work experience and level 5 (Year 2) you will complete up to a further 15 – 20 days of work experience. You will also have the opportunity to undertake practical work using our multi-million-pound state of the art engineering workshops and laboratories. It is usual for students to take one day a week throughout term time to complete their placement, though additional work during holidays is encouraged and sometimes required.

    As you progress from level 4 to level 5 it is expected that the placement allows you access to higher roles and responsibilities within the placement and you should have opportunity to perform and evidence a range of vocational and managerial learning activities during the placement including investigating the roles of teamwork, communication and motivation in the work place.

  • English and maths

    As a higher education course, it is expected that you have good English and maths skills in order to gain access to the course. Whilst on the course however, you will continue to develop and enhance these skills throughout each module with both English and maths embedded in all delivery.

  • Other important information

    During this course you will be involved in many practical lessons, in which you will gain valuable experience of real engineering. For these lessons you will need to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), steel toe cap boots, overalls and protective glasses.

    You’ll train in our state-of-the-art AME Hub – home to cutting-edge industry software, 3D printers and much more – all of which you won’t find elsewhere in the region! We’ve got excellent links with engineering and manufacturing businesses including Jaguar Land Rover. Our courses have been developed in conjunction with businesses to make sure we’re giving you the skills they are looking for.

    A growing industry, It’s estimated that engineering businesses in our region alone will need upward of 2,600 trained engineers every year for the next decade! Needless to say, once qualified, you’ll be in demand!

    The cost of this full-time course is £6,165 p.a.
