    Mathematical skills are becoming increasingly important in the workplace and in higher education.

    Core Maths is for students who are not taking A Level Maths but wish to continue developing their mathematical skills. Students will increase their confidence in using mathematics, to be better equipped for the mathematical demands of other courses, higher education, and employment.

  • Required qualifications

    As a minimum, you will have a previous grade 5 (Grade B) in GCSE Level Maths.

  • What skills will I develop?

    Core Maths builds upon and strengthens existing skills developed during GCSE Maths courses. It has been designed to maintain and develop real-life mathematical skills; there is a sharp focus on problem-solving and using and applying mathematics to solve problems relevant to students’ everyday lives. This includes financial applications of mathematics such as tax, national insurance and mortgages. Fermi estimations is another popular module.

    Core Maths can help with other subjects, in particular sciences, business studies and engineering.

    A qualification in Core Maths is valued by many universities and employers. The skills developed in Mathematics are increasingly important in the workplace and in Higher Education. Universities, Colleges and employers have welcomed the new Core Maths qualification as students will be better equipped with the skills required for many degree courses and employment.

  • Other important information

    The course will be assessed via 2 externally set exam papers each lasting 90 minutes. Dates will be given to learners at the start of the course and having been externally set are not flexible.
