    This course is for those who have already acquired counselling skills level 2, which included practical counselling skills training, and want to take the next step to become a counsellor.

    This dynamic and thought provoking course is for learners interested in using counselling skills as part of their work role and those looking to become a professional counsellor.

    You will gain a deeper insight into the three main theoretical approaches to counselling, as well as a more in-depth knowledge of the use of counselling skills in everyday life and work.

    This course will give you the knowledge and skills to effectively carry out vital elements of counselling work.

    It will not qualify you to practice as a professional counsellor, but it will develop your therapeutic skills and prepare you for training at a higher level.

  • Required qualifications

    Learners must have a Level 2 qualification in counselling or equivalent.

    The course must be an in-class course- Distance learning level 2 counselling courses WILL NOT be accepted.

    Learners should be 18+ to start the qualification.

  • What skills will I develop?

    • A solid understanding of counselling skills and theories
    • A clear understanding of ethical practice
    • A deeper self-awareness and improved self-confidence when using counselling skills
    • A valued qualification for many careers paths where counselling and pastoral skills are paramount

    There are 4 mandatory units to complete:

    • Unit 01 Developing and practicing counselling skills
    • Unit 02 Understanding different approaches to the use of counselling skills
    • Unit 03 Working ethically in helping relationships
    • Unit 04 Understanding the importance of self-development in relation to helping others
  • Careers

    Once you gain your level 3 qualification, you can progress to:

    • Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling
    • Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Advice and Guidance
    • A Counselling Degree

    This qualification does not qualify you to practice as a counsellor. However, it can support your career progression in a number of roles including:

    • Support worker (health care, social work)
    • Mental health support worker
    • Information, advice and guidance worker
    • Health education/health promotion worker
    • Support services
    • Mentoring
    • Youth work
    • Counselling
    • Citizens advice
    • Career advisors
  • Work experience

    Your counseling skills role plays with peers will be your work experience as you regularly practice counselling skills with your peers.

  • English and maths

    Learners will need to have a good level of English and maths basic skills as they will be writing weekly self-reflective journals and completing written assignments. Level 2 Qualification in English is recommended.

  • Other important information

    You will have weekly tasks to complete to pass the course (this will include regular journals, essays, research activities, short presentations, observer feedback and tutor assessments, and counselling roleplays).
