  • Is this course for you?

Want to improve your English but short on time? Unable to attend college on a weekly basis and need to study from home? Our online English functional skill course might be just for you!

The aim is to develop a wide range of valuable skills that you can use in real life and take into the workplace, including applying for jobs and positions that just were not accessible before!

*Your English & maths course could be FREE, check your eligibility and find out more here.

  • Required qualifications

No formal qualifications are required. However, in order to find the right level of study for you, previous qualifications as well as a short online initial assessment will be used.

  • What skills will I develop?

Upon enrolment you will speak to one of our specialist English teachers who will talk you through the course content and requirements, whilst determining how many hours you can dedicate to your studies. You will then receive log in details to our online learning platform which is provided by Century Tech. Century uses artificial attendance to analyse your current maths abilities and set out a pathway of study, allowing you to improve on your gaps in knowledge. As well as studying Century from the comfort of your own home, a specialist English teacher will be on hand to give you weekly support, via email and or telephone, monitoring your progress.

Some of the key topics you may study are:

    • Reading skills: gathering information/comparing texts.
    • Writing skills, including accurate use of spelling, punctuation and grammar.
    • Creating effective presentations/adapting work to suit an audience.
    • Communicating ideas and opinions in a persuasive way.

Once you feel ready, we will arrange a date for your speaking and listening assessment, as well as end of course reading and writing assessments. Assessments can be taken at one of our four campuses: Rodbaston, Cannock, Lichfield or Tamworth.

  • Careers

Functional skills qualifications are recognised by a wide range of employers and industries. By gaining your qualification you will have access to a greater range of job opportunities with improved salaries.

  • Other important information

The course lasts approximately 15 weeks depending on the progress you are making. In order to complete the course in this time we recommend dedicating 3 hours per week to your studies. Remember this is all done at home, so can be split up over 7 days of studied in one go, whichever method suits you best!
