January 2022

Martha Leicester Film & TV Student

We’d like you to meet Martha Leicester. Martha is one of our HE students, graduating from our Foundation Degree in Film and Television Production Technology last year before going on to study a PGCE with us at Lichfield College.

We recently caught up with Martha for a quick Q&A and wanted to share how Martha is creating her career.

Why did you choose South Staffordshire College to study your course / apprenticeship?

I choose this college as it was local to me, offered the courses I wanted at a much lower cost and the class size is much smaller so allows for more one to one time with lecturers.

Why did you pick the course / apprenticeship that you are studying?

I chose film and TV production as I have always loved film and wanted to learn all of the elements that go into making a film. I then chose to study PGCE as I found that teaching is something I want to go into, and eventually possibly study a PhD.

What do you like the best about the college?

This college helped me to grow my confidence. The campus also provides a wide variety of resources and kit which allows for a more varied learning experience.

Who is your tutor at college?

Was Leanne Knapman. Now Sam Jellyman.

What do you think of the support you have received from your tutor / the college?

The support I have received here at South Staffordshire College has been so helpful. I will always be grateful for all the tutors I’ve had who have enabled me to grow my confidence, supported me in my learning journey and offered advice in planning my career goals.

What is your proudest moment or thing you have achieved at college to date?

My proudest moment was in my third and final year of my TV and film production Degree. Me and my class had just finished shooting the final scene for the 72-hour feature film module and we all gathered in the classroom to have our production meeting lead by Leanne. We were all so tired, relieved but mostly still buzzing from the excitement of working as a production team. It felt like the real deal. We all spoke about how proud we were of each other; it was just a really sweet moment.

What are your career aspirations after college?

I aspire to become a university lecturer, whilst studying a Masters Degree and then hopefully progress onto studying a PhD whilst still teaching.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about studying your course / apprenticeship at South Staffordshire College?

My advice is to go for it! This place has so much to offer for each individual student.
