Students who are studying for a Level 3 Horse Management qualification at South Staffordshire College’s Rodbaston Campus have raised over £240 for the Charity ‘World Horse Welfare’ after organising a charity horse show as part of their studies.

Competitors came to Rodbaston Campus to compete in the unaffiliated event which included a selection of in-hand, ridden and novelty classes.

The event, which took place on Saturday 19th May at Rodbaston Campus’ ‘Gallows End’, was the result of months of hard work from the students, who planned, organised, promoted and delivered the event as part of their ‘Managing an Equine Event’ module. Intended to help students develop the commercial and professional skills required to successfully manage an equine business, the show was a huge success and competitors attended to compete in a selection of in-hand, ridden and novelty classes.

Supported by their tutors and wider College staff who were on hand to judge the competition and offer expert advice, all of the students had a crucial role to play in making their event a reality. It’s success was a result of a collaborative team effort between 12 students; Sophie Beckham, Holly Connor, Jordan Edwards, Kyriea Fletcher, Laura Gibson, Dior Hoyte-Dowell, Ella Hughes, Mia Ley, Niamh Lowe, Sophie McCammon, Rosie Mills-Smith and Abbie Turner.

As well as giving the learners the chance to demonstrate their equestrian and event management skills, the show also highlighted the student’s commitment to their chosen charity World Horse Welfare. Now in their 90th year, the international charity was established to improve the lives of horses in the UK and around the world through education, campaigning and hands-on-care.

Equine learners who were involved in organising the event are pictured alongside ‘Snowy’ the pony who was one of the competitors on the day.

Speaking after the event, the College’s landbased tutor Annabel Montgomery said “The learners have worked extremely hard over the past fews months and I am incredibly proud of the professionalism and hard work they demonstrated on the day. Many of the learners have shown a real aptitude for event management and we received some wonderful feedback from guests on the day. I’d like to thank all of those who supported the event to help make it possible and congratulate the learners on having raised a fantastic sum of money for World Horse Welfare.”
