Students focus on their next steps towards their career during progression week.

Hundreds of South Staffordshire College students enjoyed an inspirational week of future focussed activities last week as they took part in the College’s 2018 Progression Week.  A highlight in the college’s annual calendar, Progression Week provides the perfect opportunity for existing students to focus on their longer term career goals and evaluate their next steps.

As well as having the college’s industry expert staff on hand to offer advice and guidance on apprenticeships and higher education, students also benefited from a wide range of engaging workshops delivered by visiting experts from industry and universities.

Representatives from Staffordshire University, Derby University and the University of Wolverhampton visited the college’s campuses in Tamworth, Lichfield and Rodbaston to offer advice on student finance and writing personal statements. They also provided a valuable glimpse into life as a university student and insights into how higher level qualifications can help pave the way for rewarding careers in industries such as IT and computing, digital technologies, health and social care and sport.

For those who wanted tips on how to find a job, write a fantastic CV or excel in an interview, there was also the opportunity to get support from experienced professionals too. From the professional use of social media to how to develop vital employability skills and gain valuable work experience, there was something available for all students, whatever their ambitions. For the entrepreneurial minded, there was even the chance to take part in workshops focussing on how to set up and establish your own business.

Apprenticeships were also high on the agenda and dedicated apprenticeships experts were on hand to provide information about the benefits of becoming an apprentice; from earning a salary while gaining recognised qualifications to gaining practical, industry relevant training and experience. A popular route for students who want to earn while they learn, South Staffordshire College offer an extensive range of apprenticeships in subjects including engineering, business, construction and agriculture, all of which are available at various levels including higher. As of this September, the College’s apprenticeships offer will be growing further still as the College prepare to launch qualifications in cyber security, beauty therapy and more.

An important and popular event in the annual College calendar, Progression Week is intended to help raise aspirations, broaden horizons and support students who are soon to complete their college qualifications. Speaking about the week’s activities, South Staffordshire College’s Personal Development and Safeguarding Manager Ali Hanson says “Encouraging our students to be the best they can be is at the heart of everything we do at South Staffordshire College and our annual Progression Week is the perfect way for our students to really step back and evaluate their options. It’s extremely rewarding to see so many students inspired by and engaged in activities that have been designed to help them fulfil their ambitions. As well as those students who might be thinking about studying for a degree or applying for their first full-time job, the week is also really valuable for those who may be planning on staying with us in September to complete a higher level qualification or apprenticeship.
