South Staffordshire College learner, Kirsty Ellis, has been awarded first prize in an interior design competition organised by property developers, Miller Homes Midlands.

Kirsty designed a decoration scheme for a master bedroom which will be used in a brand new show home that the company are building and was chosen as the winner by representatives from Miller Homes and Killer5 interior designers.

Kirsty created mood boards to showcase her work which included a shabby chic design based around a floral and grey mix colour scheme and a feature wall and presented her ideas to a panel of judges.

Donna Salmon, sales manager at Miller Homes, helped to judge the competition said “It was great to work alongside the staff and students at South Staffordshire College.  It was a tough decision when it came down to choosing an overall winner for the competition, but we could really see the work Kirsty has put into her design and could visualise it looking beautiful in a show home.”

Not only did Kirsty take the top spot in the competition but she was also presented with a laptop which she will use to continue studying and designing.

Kirsty is currently working towards the completion of her second year of a Level 3 Diploma in Art & Design programme at South Staffordshire College’s Lichfield Campus.

Speaking about her award, Kirsty said “I started work on this project as soon as I heard about it back in January and I have been bringing it all together for the last three months. I have always had an interest in interior design and this competition has really helped me make my mind up about pursuing it as a career. It is something I am really passionate about.”

Kirsty Ellis shows off her winning designs, alongside Miller Homes Midlands representatives and South Staffordshire College’s Chris Hopkins.

Chris Hopkins, Head of Study Programmes at South Staffordshire College’s Lichfield Campus said “I’m absolutely thrilled with how well our learners have done during this competition. Kirsty worked really hard and represented South Staffordshire College extremely well and we are really proud of her well-deserved success.”
