  • Is this course for you?

    The aim of the course short ‘n’ sharp level 1 carpentry diploma is to develop the basic employment skills, practical skills and knowledge required in order to become a competent and employable carpenter. In only 12 weeks!

    It’s about preparing you to meet the needs of employers and preparing you to work in the industry. The course consists of practical and theoretical elements, and both parts of the course need to be successfully completed to achieve this qualification. Employers will expect good attendance, good behaviour and good communication skills enabling you to interact with clients, work safely, use initiative as well as having carpentry and joinery skills.

    As the programme progresses, you will build upon your skills in preparation for the practical assessments and knowledge tests. The programme will prepare you for employment as a skilled crafts person. A large part of the programme is project based allowing you to acquire practical skills and job-related knowledge. As a college we will be reinforcing the values expected in industry to give you the skills to be successful in work and life. The course includes the CSCS card.

  • Required qualifications

    You will need 2 GCSEs at Grade E/2 in maths and English Language or completion of an Entry Level course Gateway into Construction which is a course we also provide or site experience, this will be assessed during interview.

  • What skills will I develop?

    As a carpentry and joinery student you will develop practical skills with underpinning knowledge in a variety of topics:

    • Principles of building
    • Health and Safety Information
    • Maintain and Use Hand Tools
    • Maintain and Use Portable Power tools
    • Produce woodwork joints
    • Introduction to woodworking machines and portable power tools
  • Careers

    On successful completion of the Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry & Joinery you could be given the opportunity to progress onto the Level 2 Diploma. If you gain employment within the industry you could become an apprentice, studying for an NVQ in Carpentry & Joinery. The skills you have gained on the Level 1 and at 2 Diploma will benefit you if you choose the apprenticeship route.

    As a South Staffordshire College student you will be offered a balanced, high quality study programme to open up your options and give you the best chance of progression into further training opportunities or lasting employment.

  • English and maths

    Additional maths and English qualifications are available, just ask your tutor.

  • Other important information

    Students will need to purchase protective overalls and toe-protective footwear as well as basic stationery. Support is provided through bursary should you need this. Our friendly members of the team will be happy to help.
