  • Is this course for you?

    The qualification allows you to follow a flexible programme with a mix of distance and contact learning to suit your own needs.

    This course is aimed at learners who have a passion for health and fitness and want to pursue a career as a personal trainer in the context of gym-based exercise. Candidates will develop the necessary skills and knowledge required to enable them to plan and instruct safe and effective programmes of exercise working on 1 to 1 basis with clients. This course will give you a qualification that is recognised within the fitness industry and by employers, as a key measure of achievement.

    The YMCA qualification is a vocationally related qualification (VRQ) at Level 3 on the qualification and credit framework (QCF). It also provides access onto the register of exercise professionals (REPs) at Level 3 as well as CIMSPA.

  • Required qualifications

    This course is suitable for candidates who have experience in teaching fitness and hold a Level 2 fitness instructing qualification or equivalent. You should have experience in using gym equipment and have an active interest in working to develop the fitness and health of individuals on a 1-1 basis.

    You must be aged 18 or over before the start of the course and meet one of the following criteria Level 2 fitness instructor/equivalent

  • What skills will I develop?

    Learners will cover:

    • Anatomy and physiology including:- the heart and circulatory system- the respiratory system- structure and function of the skeleton- musculoskeletal system- postural and core stability- the nervous and energy systems and their relation to exercise
    • How to maintain health, safety, data protection and welfare in a variety of fitness environments, including the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults
    • How to programme and instruct safe and effective exercise sessions for a range of clients, the health benefits of physical activity and the importance of healthy eating
    • How to communicate with clients effectively, and motivate clients to adhere to an exercise programme on a 1-1 basis
    • The skills and knowledge required to plan and prepare a gym-based exercise programme with apparently healthy adults – both individuals and groups. This may include young people in the 14-16 age range, provided they are part of a larger adult group. Client groups also covered are older adults, ante and postnatal clients and disabled clients provided the relevant contraindications and key safety guidelines are observed

    On completion of this course you will be qualified to work as a personal trainer

    Further education:

    Specialist level 4 fitness qualifications

    Dedicated class instruction courses e.g spin, les mills, kettlebell

    Within the West midlands there has been a growth in the number of gyms and fitness Spa’s with currently around 2000 jobs within fitness instructing. It is expected that there will be an emphasis on health and wellbeing in the coming years, due to the consequences of the Covid-19 Pandemic. Government spending is expected to increase which will aid growth in this area.

     

  • Work experience

    There is no requirement for work experience on the course, however it is encouraged to be in contact to potential employers on the course to gain knowledge of working practices and understanding. The course involves working 1-1 with a client to use as a case study for your final assessment. This will provide you with real life experience of working with a client to improve their health, fitness and wellbeing.

     

  • English and maths

    English and maths make up a key component of learning across the college, on the course you will be looking at a range of key skills from spelling and pronunciation of key terminology in anatomy and physiology to the use of percentages and volumes in fitness training and testing and many more. Putting these at the core of the subjects help to develop a deeper understanding of the subjects and develop wider key skills in education.

    This is predominately a distance learning qualification, although will require some face to face contact to cover practical content, sit exams and other related assessments.
