  • Course aim

    This apprenticeship is suitable for anyone who works as a Motor Vehicle service and maintenance technician or Mechanic who repairs light vehicles such as cars and vans and works either in a dealership which focus on a particular manufacturer or an independent garage which deals with many different makes of vehicles.

    A Mechanic or Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician is responsible for servicing and repairing light vehicles such as cars and vans, working on all systems found in the vehicle.

    Work is generally based in a workshop or garage and can be as part of a team but must also be able to work independently.

  • Course content

    The knowledge which underpins the required skills will allow a Mechanic to demonstrate a thorough understanding of all of the vehicle systems. The work ranges from replacing simple parts through to solving complex faults with the use of diagnostic methods and equipment.

    The tasks faced are constantly changing, driven by the introduction of ever more complex technologies and diagnostic techniques. Routine servicing and inspection procedures, steering and suspension geometries, electrical circuit calculations, braking systems, engine and transmission systems and gear calculations. Vehicle emissions and legal requirements, alternative fuels and hybrid and electric systems.

  • Course assessment

    The apprentice will attend college one day a week.

    The apprentice will study the core knowledge, skills and behaviours as laid out in the apprenticeship plan.

    Before the Standard is met, all apprentices must hold a certificate that meets the EU’s 2014 F-gas regulation.

    Apprentices must achieve level 2 English and maths prior to taking the end point assessment.

    Fees

    If you have less than 50 staff and the apprentice is between 16-18 then the apprenticeship will be fully funded, you will only need to pay for the apprentice’s wages. If you choose to recruit an apprentice who is 19 or above you will be required to pay 5% of the cost of the apprenticeship (the government will fund 95%).

    If you are a large employer with 50+ staff you will be required to fund 5% of the apprenticeships costs regardless of the age of the learner.

    Employers with a wage bill of over £3 million will pay the cost of the apprenticeship through the apprenticeship levy.
