    This introduction course in SQL (structured query language) is designed to provide learners with the skills on how to perform tasks such as retrieving and updating databases.

    SQL is language designed to store, manipulate, and retrieve date It is a powerful database programming language and a great introduction to data management as it is relatively easy to learn.

    This course will provide you with the instruction on the basics of SQL commands as well as allow you to put them to practice. The course will teach you how to retrieve facts and show them on the screen, presenting your data in convenient, easy-to-use way.

  • Required qualifications

    No formal qualifications are required for this introduction course, but an understanding of computing, and data manipulation would be beneficial but not essential.

  • What skills will I develop?

    Selecting and sorting – This will cover adding new data, removing data, or modifying existing data.

    Standard Commands – The course will explain how the language works and explain key commands such as such as “Select”, “Insert”, “Update”, “Delete”, “Create”, and “Drop” and how can be used to accomplish almost everything within your database.

    Creating and managing tables – This element will provide you with the skills to create detailed table and manage them effectively.

    Record management – Looking at data from a wider perspective this element will provide you will the knowledge of how to manage records.

    Data sharing – The course will provide you will skills of who coordinate data sharing by users, ensuring that changes made by one user do not inadvertently wipe out changes made at nearly the same time by another user.

    Access control – With data management there needs to be some restriction of the use of that information, as such you will learn how to restrict a user’s ability to retrieve, add, and modify data, protecting stored data against unauthorized access.

  • Careers

    This course is intended to provide you with the principles of using SQL and how to apply these to create successful data management and manipulation.

    This course could be taken further via FE and HE study or applied to your own company or web presence or personal work.

  • English and maths

    English: Learners will develop verbal communication skills through class activities and discussions. Their spelling and grammar will be met through completion of exercises.

    Maths: Learners will develop confidence in maths through information and data manipulation.

  • Other important information

    This is a short course (3 hours a week) running over seven weeks (taking into consideration holidays) with a total of 21 hours’ worth of face to face teaching.

    It is expected, if required that learners will work on tasks and assignments in their own time to assist in putting together the successful completion of learning objectives for this course.
