Introduction to Cyber Security

  • Is this course for you?

    This introductory course into cyber-security is ideal for those learners looking to pursue a career in computer networking, network security or cyber or to bolster provision of a small business or enterprise.

    The course will prepare you for a potential career within this aspect of computing and cover key topics that will provide the introductory skills and fundamentals required to design and build basic measures against external cyber-threats to a company (Phishing, Denial of Service and others). The course is designed to allow practical hands-on experience of a network and will allow you to work with specialist hardware and software to provide you with the tools, techniques and knowledge to identify, configure, isolate and manage a variation of cyber-security threats.

  • Required qualifications

    No formal qualifications are required for this short course, but an understanding of computing would be beneficial but not essential.

  • What skills will I develop?

    • Idea generation and design prototyping of business cyber security provision
    • Understanding of latest software/hardware requirements
    • Configuration of a business cyber rollout
    • An understanding and context of ethical hacking
    • Approaches of how to troubleshoot cyber-attacks
  • Careers

    This course is intended to provide you with an introduction and taster toe the principles of cyber-security and to make you aware and assist in the prevention of both personal and business cyber-risks.

    This course could be taken further via FE and HE study or applied to your own home network or company.

  • English and maths

    There is no formal qualification in English or maths required for this qualification however an expectation of a good level of competency in these areas is advisable.

  • This is a short course (3 hours a week) running over seven weeks (taking into consideration holidays) with a total of 21 hours’ worth of face-to-face teaching.

    It is expected, if required, that learners will work on tasks and assignments in their own time to assist in putting together the successful completion of learning objectives for this course.
