  • Is this course for you?

    Introduction to Caring Professions is suitable for learners who are working, or wish to work, in the health and social care and early years and childcare sectors.

    If you are interested in working in Health, social care or with children and young people this course will enable you to explore the areas to support you to progress into the vocational areas.

    As part of the course you will develop the skills towards your chosen career. You will also study English and maths as part of your course support you to progress. While studying you will have work experience in a working environment to develop practical skills and learn from experienced practitioners. This course also provides the opportunity to develop transferrable skills, such as communication and teamwork. This is engaging and enjoyable introductory course that supports progression to L2 qualification in Early Years or Health and Social Care.

    In order to complete work experience in a caring environment, you will need to undertake a DBS which is a UK legal requirement when involved in regulated activity with children or vulnerable adults. The DBS check will state any criminal convictions you hold and, if appropriate, whether you are barred from working with children or vulnerable adults. This will be at a cost of £44.00.

    You will also be required to wear a uniform in work experience with a college log at a cost of approx £10. You will need to purchase stationery including a notebook, diary, lever arch file and pens and there is a course textbook that you may wish to purchase. Details of this will provided at enrolment.

  • Required qualifications

    You will need 3 GCSEs at grade E or 2 /3s or above including English and maths.

  • What skills will I develop?

    Throughout the course you will develop knowledge and skills by completing assignment tasks to produce evidence in a variety of ways including presentations, posters, leaflets written tasks and practical tasks. knowledge and skills, you will be learning about a range of service provision and values and provisions in health and childcare.

    You will develop knowledge about equality and inclusion. health and safety, care needs for babies and leisure activities that support health and childcare. You will also develop communication skills when completing 30 hours of mandatory work experience.

  • Careers

    As an introductory course, after successful completion you can progress onto level 2 in either Health and Social Care or Early Years, provided you gain the relevant qualification in English and maths. Alternatively, you can start work in an apprenticeship role through one of our supportive employers within the industry.

  • Work experience

    As part of the level 1 course you will be expected to complete 40 hours of work experience in a related caring environment. This will develop your practical skills by being part of a team and supporting practitioners, this will enable you to link theory to a real working environment.

  • English and maths

    You will be expected to attend maths and English classes alongside your qualification. We have a maths and English resource that you can use in College and remotely to support you in practising your maths and English skills.

    Employers in the caring sector require a good level of maths and English, and there will be opportunities for these skills to be practised and developed in your lessons. For example, using skills in maths to demonstrate making formula feeds for different aged babies or calculating flooring required for a nursery room, submitting assignments where spelling, grammar and sentence structure will need to be correct. Engaging in class questioning and answering sessions as part of your learning and confidence building, eventually working in groups to present a topic.
