  • Is this course for you?

    Serving Food and drink is work you can find almost anywhere, because people always need to eat. It can help you to get valuable life skills and work skills that can be used in all kinds of jobs, so is a real door-opener for opportunities.

    If you haven’t made your mind up yet, this is the qualification for you. You can choose your focus as you go, either in serving or cooking.

    This level is ideal if you’re just starting out and want a good basic understanding of hospitality work, enough to succeed in a job or move on to further study.

    You will need to purchase a uniform that should be worn at all times when in practical lessons. On interview you will be provided with a uniform list to view and costs discussed. You may be eligible for a college bursary to help you with these costs.

  • Required qualifications

    You will need 4 GCSEs grade 2-3 or above including maths and English.

  • What skills will I develop?

    Whilst studying hospitality you will work in our fully functioning on site restaurant to serve customers. You will be given the training and skills to do so by your tutor in practical lessons. These skills are then put into practice and you will be assessed by being observed by your tutor.

    You will learn how to deal with different types of customers and handle unexpected situations. For this you will need good communicational skills.

    You will also learn how to lay tables to a high standard and serve customers in the correct style.

    Your course will also give you the opportunity to learn how to serve alcoholic beverages correctly and legally.

    This course is ideal if you are outgoing or just want to develop your confidence to be able to work in the hospitality Industry.

    You will study the following units:

    • Maintain a safe, hygienic and secure working environment
    • Work effectively as part of a hospitality team
    • Maintain customer care
    • Maintain food safety when storing, holding and serving food
    • Prepare and clear areas for drinks service
    • Serve drinks
    • Prepare and clear areas for table and tray service
    • Provide a table and tray service
    • Clean and store crockery and cutlery
    • In addition to these units you will work in the kitchen to develop your cooking skills if you should choose that route at Level 2
  • Careers

    After completion of this course you can go on to study:

    • L2 Certificate in Food Preparation and Cooking
    • Production Chef Apprenticeship

     

    You may want to find employment and not study further. If this is the case you could consider jobs in:

    • Chain and Hotel Restaurants
    • Pubs
    • Events or location catering/weddings
    • Health Spas
    • Cruise Ships

     

    This gives you the opportunity to work your way up the ladder to supervisor or manager positions.

    Everyone needs to eat, so you will find jobs available across the UK and international if you wish to travel.

    Expected Salaries:

    • Waiting staff – Around 12-27,000 a year depending on experience, employer and location.
    • Restaurant Manager – Around 18-45,000 a year depending on experience and location.
    • Catering/Events Manager – Around 19-40,000 a year depending on experience and location.
  • Work experience

    During your studies you are expected to undergo a minimum of 30 hours work experience in the industry. You are required to secure a work placement in an establishment where you can put your skills into practice and learn new skills from the employer.

  • English and maths

    If you have not already achieved English and maths at grade 4-5 you will continue to study the subjects and be able to improve on your existing grades.

    You will be timetabled for 3 hours of both English and maths a week which is a compulsory part of your career development.
