The level 3 Health and Social Care course will provide you with the skills, knowledge and experience to work in the health and social care industries.

Completion of Year 1 of the course is the Level 3 Technical Certificate in Health and Social Care and is the equivalent of 1.5 A levels.

Completion of Year 2 of the course is the Level 3 Technical Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care and is the equivalent of 3 A levels.

This course can provide you with progression into employment, to an apprenticeship, or to university.
Required qualifications

To enrol onto the level 3 Health and Social Care course you need four GCSE’s at Grade 4 or above (or equivalent). These must include English Language and maths.
What skills will I develop?

You will cover several units to provide you with the skills and knowledge for working in a variety of different roles in the health and social care industries including:
- Equality and Diversity
- Safeguarding
- Infection Prevention and Control
- Working in Health and Social Care
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Psychology
- You will also develop skills such as:
- Collaborative working
- Communication skills
- Presentation skills
- Time management skills
- Problem Solving skills
Careers

Some Careers available to you on completion of the course include:
- Care Support Workers in adult residential settings
- Healthcare Assistants in community, primary care and acute health environments
- Care Support Workers in domiciliary services, supported living or day services
- Community-based Support Workers
It will also provide you with UCAS points to progress to University to study to become:
- A nurse
- A social worker
- A paramedic
- A psychologist
- And many more…
Work experience

As part of the course, you will need to complete mandatory placement hours. In year 1 you will need to complete 75 hours, and in year 2 you will need to complete 100 hours.

These hours can be completed in a health and social care setting such as:
- A Care Home
- Community Care
- A Hospital
- A Funeral Directors
- A Pharmacy
- A GP Surgery
You will be required to find your own work experience placement to support your own career progression. This will also enable you to develop the skills and knowledge applicable to your career pathway.
English and maths

Maths and English is used every day in health and social care, whether it be writing reports, making notes on a handover, administering medication, taking temperatures, calculating body mass index, measuring weight, completing fluid intake and output charts, planning time critical journeys, calculating calories, working out a route, helping an individual with their finances, shopping or simply just arriving to work on time – the list is endless! It is therefore vital that these skills continue to be developed throughout your course and your career. Within your study programme, you will be given the opportunity to improve your GCSE grade in maths and English, you will also enhance your skills through vocationally related tasks and competitions.
Other important information

As your work experience placement will be with vulnerable children or adults you must have a DBS completed prior to starting.
