  • Course aim

    If you’re looking for a rewarding career that allows you to be creative, work flexibly, and with a range of different people every day.

    There are two distinctly different job roles within this occupational profile: Hairdresser and Barber.

    Hairdressers: will be able to shampoo and condition hair, cut hair using a range of techniques, style and finish hair to create variety of looks, and colour and lighten hair for ladies and men.

    Barbers: will be able to shampoo and condition hair, cut hair using barbering techniques, style and finish hair, cut facial hair into shape and provide shaving services for men.

    There are no entry requirements

    You will need to be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week in a relevant job but we can assist you in finding a placement.

  • Course content

    Hairdressing

    • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
    • Cut hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks
    • Style and finish hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks
    • Colour and lighten hair using a range of techniques
    • Options of Perming, Hair relaxing treatments and techniques, or Hair Extensions

    Barbering

    • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
    • Cutting hair using barbering
    • techniques to create a variety of looks
    • Style and finish men’s hair
    • Cut facial hair into shap
    • Shaving services
  • Course assessment

    Apprentices are required to attend college once a week, the rest of the training will take place in the workplace with in-house training by the employer. Our hairdressing assessor will visit and observe the apprentice in practice

    The end-point assessment (EPA) is designed to take a snap-shot assessment of the learner’s practical skills – from styling techniques to customer service.

    The apprenticeship assessor usually comes to the learner’s site to complete the assessment. The learner must work on a minimum of 2 models and bring their own products and tools. The EPA will last no longer than 6 hours, not including breaks.

    • Level 2 Diploma for Hair Professionals (Hairdressing/Barbering)
    • You will develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours.
    • You need to have an employer to support your Apprenticeship and be employed in a relevant job role.
    • Level 1 Functional Skills in English and maths

    Fees

    If you have less than 50 staff and the apprentice is between 16-18 then the apprenticeship will be fully funded, you will only need to pay for the apprentice’s wages. If you choose to recruit an apprentice who is 19 or above, you will be required to pay 5% of the cost of the apprenticeship (the government will fund 95%)

    If you are a large employer with 50+ staff, you will be required to fund 5% of the apprenticeship costs regardless of the age of the learner.

    Employers with a wage bill of over £3 million will pay the cost of the apprenticeship through the apprenticeship levy. For more guidance on this please refer to our website.

    This apprenticeship provides the perfect foundation for several career avenues within the hairdressing industry, including hair stylist, colour technician, stylist on a cruise ship, a mobile stylist, or even running your very own salon
