    Are you over 19? Fancy upskilling or challenging yourself to a new career? The Level 2 Certificate in Women’s Hairdressing is a substantial vocational qualification that will prepare you for a career as a junior hairdresser/stylist. You will experience working in a real salon environment where skills are practiced and performed on real paying clients. Once complete, you will be qualified as a junior stylist. You will then have an opportunity to progress on to level 2 barbering, level 3 hairdressing or work in the industry.

  • Required qualifications

    There are no formal entry requirements for candidates undertaking these qualifications. However, centres will ensure that candidates have the potential and opportunity to gain the qualification successfully.

  • What skills will I develop?

    This is a vocational qualification and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a hairdresser/stylist including the mandatory units which include, working in the hair industry, health and safety, client consultation, shampoo and conditioning hair, cutting women’s hair and the art of dressing hair. You will also be given the opportunity to further develop your understanding and skills by selecting optional specialist units which include, colouring and lightening hair, reception duties, perming hair, plaiting and twisting hair and others.

    Throughout this qualification you will develop your knowledge and understanding of anatomy, health and safety, client consultation, and products, tools and equipment. You will also develop a range of technical skills enabling you to effectively consult with clients, shampoo and condition, colour, and cut and finish their hair. You will also develop interpersonal skills, which will assist you to communicate effectively with clients.

  • Careers

    There are currently nearly 9,000 jobs for hairdressing/barbering within the West midlands and this is predicted to grow in the next 3 years, making it a good time to pursue a career in hairdressing.

    This qualification will prepare you for employment as a junior hairdresser/stylist. You will also be eligible to join the professional trade body, the Hairdressing Council as a graduate registered hairdresser. Career opportunities as a hairdresser/stylist exist in a variety of contexts, including:

    • Commercial salon
    • Independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings

    Whilst this qualification’s primary purpose is to prepare you for employment, you may choose to further develop your skill base by undertaking specialist qualifications at Level 3 or sidestep into a Level 2 barbering qualification or select an alternative beauty route.

    The average salary for a Junior Hair Stylist is £15,555 per year in England, which meets the national average. This will depend on experience, age and area.

  • Work experience

    Work experience is not a requirement for part time learners however we strongly advise a minimum of 30 hours per year to help develop your skills and gain valuable industry experience to assist your future career.

  • English and maths

    English and maths will be embedded into the course whereby we look at how they naturally occur. Maths and numbers are central to many tasks we all do every day and hairdressing is no exception. Although you might think you’re “bad at maths” because you didn’t do well at it at school, you’re using it all the time at work, probably without realising it. We will look at ratios, percentages, angles, time, verbal and written communication and much more!

  • Other important information

    There is a requirement to purchase a hairdressing kit and uniform. Uniform and kit are a compulsory requirement of the course.

    • Black trousers
    • Black flat shoes
    • Black tunic

    Full hairdressing kit (Cost to be confirmed approximately £200)
    This includes training heads, scissors, combs, clips and brushes
