  • Is this course for you?

Our GCSE adult courses, allow learners who may have just missed out on that elusive grade 4 (C in old money) or had a poor experience in school, the chance to retake and pass in one academic year. Also ideal for those who have been out of education a while, have good levels of English and want to achieve a formal qualification and progression in their career.

  • Required qualifications

We recommend that you have already achieved a graded English qualification, e.g. a grade 3 or D at GCSE level or Level 2 Functional Skills qualification. There are, however, exceptions to this, and we welcome any interested applicants. A short initial assessment at the start of the course usually indicates whether it will be suitable or not.

  • What skills will I develop?

You will undertake a range of engaging and fun activities which will improve your understanding and ability to:

    • Read fluently, and with good understanding, a wide range of texts from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, including literature, literary non-fiction, reviews and journalism.
    • Read and evaluate texts critically and make comparisons between texts.
    • Summarise and synthesise information or ideas from texts.
    • Use knowledge gained from wide reading to inform and improve your own writing.
    • Use grammar correctly and punctuate and spell accurately.
    • Acquire and apply a wide vocabulary, alongside a knowledge and understanding of grammatical terminology.
    • Listen to and understand spoken language and use spoken Standard English effectively.

Not only will we get you exam ready, but we will improve the skills above so that you can apply them in the world of work and life, successfully.

  • Careers

Nearly all careers require good levels of English and many require formal qualifications to match. Statistics show that those with good levels of English often earn more than those without.
It may also be that you are looking to go onto Higher Education; this will support you in that quest.

  • Other important information

The course lasts one academic year: exams are planned for May and June.
All students will need to attend a 2.5-hour teaching session, as well as dedicate 1 hour per week of independent study time.
