English lesson
  • Is this course for you?

Our online GCSE English course allows learners who may have just missed out on that elusive grade 4 (C in old money) or had a poor experience in school, the chance to retake and pass in one academic year. This course is ideal for anybody who has wants a flexible online study programme so that they can work from home.

Also ideal for those who have been out of education a while, have good levels of English and want to achieve a formal qualification and progression in their career.

  • Required qualifications

We recommend that you have already achieved a graded English qualification, e.g. a grade 3 or D at GCSE level or Level 2 Functional Skills qualification. There are, however, exceptions to this, and we welcome any interested applicants. A short initial assessment at the start of the course usually indicates whether it will be suitable or not.

We also recommend that you are confident in using IT so that you can study online effectively.

  • What skills will I develop?

You will undertake a range of engaging and fun activities which will improve your understanding and ability to:
    • Read fluently, and with good understanding, a wide range of texts from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, including literature, literary non-fiction, reviews and journalism.
    • Read and evaluate texts critically and make comparisons between texts.
    • Summarise and synthesise information or ideas from texts.
    • Use knowledge gained from wide reading to inform and improve your own writing.
    • Use grammar correctly and punctuate and spell accurately.
    • Acquire and apply a wide vocabulary, alongside a knowledge and understanding of grammatical terminology.
    • Listen to and understand spoken language and use spoken Standard English effectively.

Not only will we get you exam ready, but we will improve the skills above so that you can apply them in the world of work and life, successfully.

  • Careers

Nearly all careers require good levels of English and many require formal qualifications to match. Statistics show that those with good levels of English often earn more than those without.
It may also be that you are looking to go onto Higher Education; this will support you in that quest.

  • Other important information

The course lasts one academic year with exams planned in May and June 2021. There are 3 exams (includes 1 x internally assessed exam for Spoken Language) in total and learners will need to be required to sit all exams at one of our campuses: Rodbaston, Cannock, Lichfield or Tamworth.

All students will receive ‘live’ teaching and video support on a weekly basis and have teaching, learning and assessment activities provided via google classroom and Century Tech. Teachers will provide regular feedback on progress, with 1:1 video meetings built into the programme, ensuring you stay on track to pass successfully.
