  • Is this course for you?

    Studying GCSE English literature can help you prepare for next steps such as further study in A levels or apprenticeships. This creative course will support careers in teaching, journalism, media, politics and marketing and include the study of Shakespeare, 19th century/modern texts and poetry.

    You will undertake a 2 hour online class weekly, via Microsoft Teams and have independent tasks set which you can complete in your own time. You will be working alongside like-minded people in a proactive online environment with professional and experienced English tutors.

  • Required qualifications

    You will have a previous grade 3/D in GCSE English and or a Level 1 Functional Skills English qualification. These grades need to be supported by a strong initial assessment score (initial assessment can be taken at one of our open days).

  • What skills will I develop?

    What skills and knowledge will I develop? (300 words max.)

    The course will encourage you to develop knowledge and skills in reading, writing and critical thinking. Studying GCSE English Literature will encourage you to read widely for pleasure, and as a preparation for studying literature at a higher level.

    As part of this course you will:

    • read a wide range of classic literature fluently and with good understanding, and make connections across the reading
    • read in depth, critically and evaluatively, so that you are able to discuss and explain your understanding and ideas
    • develop the habit of reading widely and often
    • appreciate the depth and power of the English literary heritage
    • write accurately, effectively and analytically about your reading, using Standard English
    • acquire and use a wide vocabulary, including the grammatical terminology and other literary and linguistic terms you need to criticise and analyse what you read.
  • Careers

    A GCSE Grade 4 or above opens many doors for you. You may be looking to continue your education by going to University and require this qualification for entry to the course. Job opportunities in all areas and promotion within your chosen career can also be more accessible with a GCSE English qualification.

    You may just want to improve on your previous qualifications for yourself or wish to read more widely and enter into discussions with like minded people.

  • Other important information

    The course will be assessed through two paper based exams.

    Paper 1 covers Shakespeare plays and a 19th Century novel.

    Paper 2 covers modern prose and both seen and unseen poetry.

    Although the course is online, exams need to be attended at one of our campuses.
