English Writing
  • Is this course for you?

Need a GCSE in English to take the next step in your career or training and need it fast? Then this online course could be for you.

South Staffordshire College is giving you the opportunity to achieve a GCSE English qualification over a 5-month period (Jan to June), rather than having to study for the whole academic year.

You will undertake a 2.5-hour online class weekly, via Microsoft Teams and have independent tasks set which you can complete in your own time. You will be working alongside like-minded people in a proactive online environment with professional and experienced English tutors.

  • Required qualifications

We recommend that you have already achieved a graded English qualification, e.g. a grade 3 or D at GCSE level or Level 2 Functional Skills qualification. There are, however, exceptions to this, and we welcome any interested applicants. Grades need to be supported by a strong initial assessment score (initial assessment can be taken at one of our open days).

  • What skills will I develop?

You will undertake a range of engaging and fun activities which will improve your understanding and ability to:

    • Read fluently, and with good understanding, a wide range of texts from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, including literature, literary non-fiction, reviews and journalism.
    • Read and evaluate texts critically and make comparisons between texts.
    • Summarise and synthesise information or ideas from texts.
    • Use knowledge gained from wide reading to inform and improve your own writing.
    • Use grammar correctly and punctuate and spell accurately.
    • Acquire and apply a wide vocabulary, alongside a knowledge and understanding of grammatical terminology.
    • Listen to and understand spoken language and use spoken Standard English effectively.

Not only will we get you exam ready, but we will improve the skills above so that you can apply them in the world of work and life, successfully.

  • Careers

Nearly all careers require good levels of English and many require formal qualifications to match. Statistics show that those with good levels of English often earn more than those without.
It may also be that you are looking to go onto Higher Education; this will support you in that quest.

  • Other important information

The course concludes with two paper-based exams which are externally set by AQA and the dates of these exams are set by external agents. At present we have a provisional timetable for these exams which is subject to change.

Although the course is online, exams need to be attended at one of our campuses.
