    Whatever the reason, South Staffordshire College is here to help. We have vastly experienced staff who can help you achieve your goals in just 13 weeks. Study with like-minded people in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.

    We have a range of functional skills levels on offer, from entry 3 to level 2, daytime and evening options to fit around your current life commitments and 3 campuses to choose from meaning you’ll never have to travel far. If you can’t attend our 2-hour sessions every week, please check out our fully online/digital offer.

    Our functional skill English courses are broken down into 3 main sections: Speaking and Listening (5 weeks), Reading (5 weeks) and Writing (5 weeks). As well as making the course manageable this also allows students to enrol at various points in the course. So if you miss the September start date, you could also enrol wc 11th October to start Reading or wc 22nd November to start Writing. If you miss the January start date you can also enrol wc 28th February.

  • Required qualifications

    No formal qualifications are required. However, in order to find the right level of study for you, previous qualifications as well as a short online initial assessment will be used

  • What skills will I develop?

    Some of the key topics you will study are:

    Reading skills: gathering information/comparing texts.
    Writing skills, including accurate use of spelling, punctuation and grammar.
    Creating effective presentations and adapting work to suit different audiences.
    Communicating ideas and opinions in a persuasive way.

    You will develop the skills above relative to work and life situations as well as receiving effective preparation for exams.

  • Careers

    Functional skills qualifications are recognised by a wide range of employers and industries. By gaining your qualification you will have access to a greater range of job opportunities with improved salaries.

    You will have the opportunity to progress through functional skills levels (up to level 2) as well as onto GCSE if this is where your ambitions lie.

  • Other important information

    Within the 13-week course you will undertake assessments in speaking and listening, as well as externally set reading and writing either online or paper based.

    As well as 2 hours of face to face delivery per week, you will also gain access to google classroom and Century, which are supportive online tools that allow you to further your knowledge away from college. We highly recommend learners spend and addition 1-2 hours per week, using these tools to enhance their chances of passing their exams and retaining the skills they need for their chosen careers.
