  • Is this course for you?

The aim of the course is to develop the basic skills in painting, carpentry and joinery, and bricklaying ready for pathway into one of the main trade areas offered by the college.

The gateway course is specifically built to support learners who aren’t quite ready for our full level 1 programmes for whatever reason that may be.

This course isn’t a course just for people who don’t know where they want to be but to support learners onto the construction journey with a helping hand.

  • Required qualifications

No qualifications are essential, but learners should be working towards GCSE grade 1/2.

  • What skills will I develop?

As this is a multi-discipline qualification, you will gain knowledge and understanding in the following areas:

    • Health and safety
    • Sustainability
    • Basic hand tool skills (Painting and Decorating, Carpentry and Joinery, and Bricklaying)
    • Team working skills
    • Communication skills
  • Careers

On completing this qualification you will be offered a progression tutorial to discuss your next steps.

These could include progressions to the next levels of your chosen trade area:

    • Level 1 Certificate in Brick or Carpentry
    • Level 1 Diploma in Brick or Carpentry

You could also look to apply for an apprenticeship in any construction area you wish which tutors will support.

  • Work experience

Preparing you for the working world is very important to us so that you may be successful in your next steps. To support you on this journey, all qualifications have a mandatory work experience element with a minimum of 40 hours expected.

Work experience placements provide you with the opportunity to develop your skills, have a better understanding of the industry you want to work in and give you an insight into what it is like to be employed. They can also be great fun and very rewarding and you may even be offered a great reference, a part–time job, holiday working hours, apprenticeships, or full-time jobs.

Once you start your course you will be provided with further information about work experience programmes, but it is never too early for you to start thinking about work experience placements and finding an employer who will offer you an opportunity.

  • English and maths

Whilst at South Staffordshire College, you will be given the opportunity to improve your maths and English skills by continuing to study at GCSE or Functional Skill level. We have a great team working alongside your main course tutors with the skills and knowledge to improve your maths and English skills.

  • Other important information

For this qualification learners will need to purchase:

    • Stationary and writing materials
