  • Course aim

    The construction industry is central to creating homes and community buildings that support the development of effective infrastructure that society needs.

    Electricians install, maintain and repair electrical systems in industrial, commercial and domestic environments.

    Electricians might work in both indoor and outdoor settings.

    Electrical equipment and systems may include switchboards, motors, cables, fuses, thermal relays, fault current protection switches, heating, lighting, air conditioning and metering equipment as well as crime and fire alarm systems and renewable energy technologies.

    Which job roles is this Apprenticeship suitable for?

    Installation Electrician or Maintenance Electrician

    Electrical Apprentices would usually be expected to have Level 2 English and maths prior to joining the course however those who join without it, will need to achieve it prior to taking the end-point assessment.

    You will need to be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week in a relevant job but we can assist you in finding a placement.

  • Course content

    The apprentice will study the core knowledge, skills and behaviours as laid out in the apprenticeship plan.

    This occupation includes two different pathways – Installation OR Maintenance.

    Installation Electricians work on the installation, testing, commissioning and maintenance of low voltage (less than 1000v) electrical and electronic devices and appliances.

    Maintenance Electricians work on the maintenance of electrical and electronic installations including automated production systems. Duties include the supervision of the equipment, its maintenance and necessary repairs.

    They are able to work on their own proficiently and work without immediate supervision in the most efficient and economical manner.

    They may contribute to the design of electrical systems. They are able to set out jobs from drawings and specifications and requisition the necessary installation materials.

    Electrical safety is an important area of Electricians’ work. On completion of their work the electrical systems must be safe to use. They must adhere to safe working practices without endangering themselves or others.

    What qualification will I get?

    • Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification – Installation OR Maintenance
    • 18th Edition
    • AM2
    • You will also qualify to apply for an ECS card

    Apprentices are required to attend college once a week, the rest of the training will take place in the workplace with in-house training by the employer. Our workplace assessor will visit and observe the apprentice in practice.

    • Knowledge – Apprentices attend college based classes and are able to access the college’s online learning environment where specially prepared learning materials are available 24/7.
    • Skills and Behaviours – This development will be led by the employer in the workplace. College Assessors will visit the workplace to observer the apprentice undertaking their normal on-the-job duties, and complete reviews to make sure the apprentice is staying on track with their work. In conjunction with the employer and the apprentice, the Assessor will develop an action plan to show what knowledge units are being studied, what evidence needs to be prepared and supported ahead of the next Assessor visit.
    • Functional Skills – Individuals without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking the end-point assessment

  • Fees

    If you have less than 50 staff and the apprentice is between 16-18 then the apprenticeship will be fully funded, you will only need to pay for the apprentice’s wages. If you choose to recruit an apprentice who is 19 or above, you will be required to pay 5% of the cost of the apprenticeship (the government will fund 95%).

    If you are a large employer with 50+ staff, you will be required to fund 5% of the apprenticeship costs regardless of the age of the learner.
