    Do you want to have a positive impact on the planet and be part of the ongoing solution to climate change, habitat loss and species extinction? If so, then this course is for you!

    The range of job opportunities and employment prospects within the countryside sector is far greater than many people realise.

    Studying at the Rodbaston College gives you access to a diverse and vibrant rural estate with a multitude of habitats including woodland, wetland, grassland, ponds, lakes, canal, formal gardens and farmed areas. We are also local to many country parks and areas of outstanding natural beauty such as Cannock Chase, which add an extra dimension to trips and practical sessions.

    A balanced approach to practical skills and scientific understanding will put you at the forefront of the fight to improve not only local but also national and even international ecosystems, all backed up and taught by staff who have a wide breadth of experience and knowledge gained in this dynamic and interesting sector.

    Taught sessions may start inside the classroom but often break out into the great outdoors and with dedicated practical sessions, skills are developed at a rapid pace to engage and enthuse.

    Our links to local and national experts always makes guest lecture time informative and fun, and networking with prospective employers is always a good career move!

  • Required qualifications

    Entry requirements = 5 GCSE’s

    • English, Science and two others must be grade 4 or above
    • Maths must be grade 5 or above

  • What skills will I develop?

    A good balance of sector relevant skills and knowledge is taught in both a classroom and practical hands-on setting. A strong emphasis is put on the practical skills that industry requires such as using strimmers, tractors, chainsaws, hedge cutters and other power tools. Also, more traditional aspects of estate maintenance and habitat creation are covered with the use of hand-tools for felling, fencing, digging, building gates & stiles, hedge-laying, pond creation and other ecosystem enhancing tasks.

    To back this up you will develop a deep understanding and knowledge base of a variety of habitats such as woodland, coastal, wetland, farmland, heathland to name but a few.

    In particular, the links between habitats, populations of species and how humans impact them is taught in a manner that enables you to see the bigger picture when engaging with the subjects.

    Other wider skills and knowledge are also contained within the program such as the importance and relevance of health & safety and how to look after each other in a work setting, how to deal with volunteers and the ‘general public’ who visit and enjoy much of our countryside.

    You will have the chance to set up and investigate or carry a project of your choosing allowing individuals with different interests to develop them further and entwine them with not only this course but also your future career.

    This course will prepare you for a career as a:

    • Countryside Ranger
    • Estate Warden
    • Ecologist
    • Consultant
    • Government Advisor
    • Environmental Scientist
    • Campaigner
    • Education Assistant
    • Volunteer Co-ordinator

    Or to become self employed

  • Work experience

    This course requires you to undertake a minimum of 150 hours (around 20 working days) of relevant work experience. You do not have to have secured a placement to start the course but a good idea of where you would like to go would be an advantage.

    Industry experience is designed to further develop and enhance skills being taught during vocational sessions and is an important part of the study program ahead of starting your career.

  • English and maths

    If you are aged 16-18 and are yet to gain a 4 or above in maths and English then the college will help you achieve this as part of your study programme. If you are 19+ and are looking to improve your maths & English then these subjects can form part of the course. The benefits of improving your skills in these qualifications are not to be underestimated and can lead to better employment prospects and higher earning potential in your chosen career.

    As part of this qualification learners will study an extended project module and Maths at an advanced level.

  • Other important information

    No specific uniform is required but warm and waterproof clothes for winter practical’s is a must, a range of tree/flower/fungi/bird ID books would also be an advantage.
