Computing, Digital and Information Technology – Level 1

    Do you have an interest in computer? Are you looking to start a career pathway into networking, programming, or in cyber security? Then Computing and Emerging Technologies is the right course for you!

    You need to have a passion in computing and want to make your career in the computing world. Computing is a science; your passion needs to be in ‘how’ computing works and how it fits into society today and beyond as its very much the driving force for industry and the wider economy.

    You will study a variety of subjects across the computing spectrum, including networking and how networks communicate, programming, IT support, web development, databases and digital graphics to name just a few.

    When joining the college, you will be given access to Adobe Creative Cloud along with other software that will be needed throughout your course. We use software that enables you to develop skills with no limitations.

    The only thing that we require students to bring in to college is pens, pencils and sketchbooks as you will be designing and sketching out ideas.

    The course is 1 year study programme and you will take units that will be examined.

  • Required qualifications

    For the Level 1 course you will need Entry level 3 English and Maths and a real enthusiasm to working with computers.

  • What skills will I develop?

    Our course offers you a pathway into this exciting career and the Level 1 Introductory course provides students who don’t have the entry requirements to start on a L2 the opportunity to develop their study skills for future progression, including key transferable skills, in addition to a broader range of skills required in the IT sector

    You will learn skills in being Organised, developing a personal progression Plan, working with others, and researching skills, in addition to IT fundamentals which may include, developing Digital information using IT, using digital communication technologies, Solving Technical IT problems, Creating Spreadsheets, websites, computer programmes digital products and digital animated graphics.

  • Careers

    Once you have completed the Level 1 course you may want to consider our Level 2 programme. Following a successful year on the level 2 you could then progress on to our level 3, and potential HNC/HND in Applied computing, or side step to our Games provision at the Lichfield Campus.

    You could move into an apprenticeship, again offered by South Staffordshire College, or you could gain employment.

    Following successful completion of a level 3 or apprenticeship, you could start your career as a Trainee IT Technician, Junior .Net Developer, Computer Engineer, Computer Repair Technician, Graphics Designer, Data Analyst to name just a few with an average wage of between £20,000 – £30,000.

    Our dedicated work experience team are here to help and support you in finding a meaningful work experience opportunity.

    Recent studies have shown that employers consider work experience to be extremely desirable. Whilst qualifications are hugely important, employers also require candidates to have skills and experience necessary for the workplace.

    Preparing you for the working world is very important to us, so that you may be successful in your next step.

    Work experience placements provide you with the opportunity to develop your skills; have a better understanding of the industry you want to work in and give you an insight into what it is like to be employed. They can also be great fun and very rewarding and you may even be offered a great reference, a part–time job, holiday working hours, apprenticeships or full-time jobs.

    Once you start your course you will be provided with further information about work experience programmes, but it is never too early for you to start thinking about work experience placements and finding an employer who will offer you an opportunity.

    Work experience is an opportunity for you to gain experience in your chosen career path in order to develop relevant skills. Equally, it also helps you to acquire employability skills, attitudes and behaviours that are essential for future employment. There will be an opportunity for you to reflect on your performance during work experience and you will receive some form of reference/feedback from the employer.

    If you have not achieved your intended grade for maths and English, you will have the opportunity to continue studying these at the college. You will also be developing these skills within your study programme.
