    This course forms part of the newly revised Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) qualifications. Completion of this course and the Level 2 Certificate in Practical Horticulture will enable you to obtain the full qualification of RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles and Practices of Horticulture.

    This course is suitable for those already working within the industry or for those with a keen interest who want to obtain a formally recognised qualification.

  • Required qualifications

    There are no formal entry requirements, however a keen interest in gardening and the outdoors is essential. Discussion with the horticulture tutors would be of benefit prior to enrolment – email tutor Nicola Davies.

  • What skills will I develop?

    On this theory course, you will develop a level of plant knowledge that is required by horticulture industries. You will understand the science behind horticulture and the effects that it has on wider society.

    The course consists of 2 units:

    • Unit 1: Plant Science I, Plant Health, Plant Nutrition, Plant Specification
    • Unit 2: Plant Science II, Planting Styles, Horticulture and Society, Biodiversity

    Each unit will be assessed separately by examination (these run in Feb and June each year). Achievement is at Pass, Merit or Distinction.

  • Careers

    Progression can include studying for the Level 2 RHS Practical Certificate which will count towards the overall Level 2 Certificate in the Principles and Practices of Horticulture. You can also progress on to Level 3 RHS theory courses.

    • Head Gardener
    • Landscaper
    • Garden Designer
    • Grower/ Nursery Manager
    • Plant Breeder
    • Commercial Horticulturalist
    • Small business owner
    • Horticulture writer/researcher
  • Other important information

    This is a one-year part-time course where you will attend college 1 day per week.

    Study days from September 2023 are to be confirmed.
