Computer-aided design (CAD) involves creating computer models defined by geometrical parameters. These models typically appear on a computer monitor as a three-dimensional representation of a part or a system of parts, which can be readily altered by changing relevant parameters.

CAD systems enable designers to view objects under a wide variety of representations and to test these objects by simulating real-world conditions.

Using CAD, it is possible to simulate in three dimensions the movement of a part through a production process. This process can simulate feed rates, angles and speeds of machine tools, the position of part-holding clamps, as well as range and other constraints limiting the operations of a machine. The continuing development of the simulation of various manufacturing processes is one of the key means by which CAD and CAM systems are becoming increasingly integrated. CAD/CAM systems also facilitate communication among those involved in design, manufacturing, and other processes.

    • Available at our Cannock College on a Tuesday evening

    Cost: £699

  • Required qualifications

You don’t need any qualifications, just the ‘hunger’ to get a job and the ‘want’ to learn a new skill.

  • What skills will I develop?

    • Principles of the 2D/3D drawing environment, in terms of hardware, software and physical surroundings
    • The typical composition of a CAD system
    • Associated IT, CAD hardware and operating systems
    • A range of commands to create and constrain sketches
    • A range of commands to produce extruded and revolved features
  • Careers

The qualification could lead to a career as a CAD draughtsperson.

It could also help you to progress into similar courses within further education.

  • English and maths

Whilst at South Staffordshire College, you will be given the opportunity to improve your maths and English skills by continuing to study at GCSE or Functional Skill level. We have a great team working alongside your main course tutors with the skills and knowledge to improve your maths and English skills.

  • Other important information

You are required to purchase safety boots, work gear and details of these will be discussed at interview. All other equipment such as power tools and safety aids, PPE, are supplied by the college as required.

Additional home study will be required as part of this course.
