  • Is this course for you?

This course is suitable for anyone who wishes to gain an A level equivalent qualification in a construction subject.

This course is designed to provide career development opportunities to those already working in the construction design and build sectors undertaking career development, and to those who are entering the construction industry for the first time as an advance apprentice, for example.

  • Required qualifications

In order to make this course as accessible as possible, there are a number of entry routes, including:

    • Level 2 Diploma in Construction in the Built Environment
    • Four full GCSEs : Maths grade 5, English language grade 4 and 2 further subjects at grade 4 (ideally physics science, history, geography)

A formal interview with an initial assessment of current English and maths skills will also have to be undertaken.

  • What skills will I develop?

As this is an academic qualification leading to a professional or technician status, the majority of the programme is delivered in a classroom environment. However, practical project work, design work and site visits will be undertaken as part of the course.

Your work and progress will be continuously assessed by a range of methods including an externally assessed exam and a design project, internally assessed assignments, practical activities, and tutor observations.

  • Careers

The Foundation Diploma is a one-year programme of study, if completed successfully, it can allow you to progress to higher education, or on to employment in the construction industry at a professional or technician level.

There are many careers within the construction industry and this course will give you an idea into which area you would like to study next. Studying the next level course will then get you well on your way to become an expert in your chosen industry. You could also study an apprenticeship and earn while you learn.

  • Work experience

Our dedicated Work Experience team are here to help and support you in finding a meaningful work experience opportunity.

Recent studies have shown that employers consider work experience to be extremely desirable. Whilst qualifications are hugely important, employers also require candidates to have skills and experience necessary for the workplace.

Preparing you for the working world is very important to us, so that you may be successful in your next step.

Work experience placements provide you with the opportunity to develop your skills; have a better understanding of the industry you want to work in and give you an insight into what it is like to be employed. They can also be great fun and very rewarding and you may even be offered a great reference, a part–time job, holiday working hours, apprenticeships, or full-time jobs.

Once you start your course you will be provided with further information about work experience programmes, but it is never too early for you to start thinking about work experience placements and finding an employer who will offer you an opportunity.

Work experience is an opportunity for you to gain experience in your chosen career path in order to develop relevant skills. Equally, it also helps you to acquire employability skills, attitudes and behaviours that are essential for future employment. There will be an opportunity for you to reflect on your performance during work experience and you will receive some form of reference/feedback from the employer.

  • Other important information

Students will need to purchase steel toe cap footwear, as well as basic stationery for note taking in sessions. Support is provided through bursary should you need this. Our friendly Learner Services team will be happy to help.
