Award in Working with Children – Level 1

  • Is this course for you?

    The qualification is an introductory course, designed for learners aged 19 and above, regardless of employment status, who would like, or need, to develop their understanding of the main issues in relation to childcare learning and development. The qualification provides learners with a good insight into the practical qualities they require, not only for working with young children but also for employment in general.

  • Required qualifications

    There are no formal entry requirements, however you will need a passion for working with children.

  • What skills will I develop?

    You will develop a basic knowledge and understanding of the needs of young children, aged from birth to five years, based in a variety of settings. It will also help you understand the practitioner’s role in supporting children’s development. You will find out about healthy eating for children and planning and taking part in activities to encourage children to eat healthily. You will learn how to support the provision of a safe learning environment for young children and develop a basic understanding of the health and safety requirements and the importance of keeping all children safe from harm. You will be introduced to some of the basic skills needed to work with others in a practical way and develop good working relationships. You will develop a basic understanding of the values and principles which underpin all work with children, focusing on the importance of treating all children with equal concern and according to their stage of development. You will design a range of play activities for young children aimed at their age and stage of development.

  • Careers

    This qualification is a stepping stone to the L2 Diploma in Early Years, it provides skills and knowledge that will enhance job opportunities in the childcare sector, potential roles could include:

    • Creche Assistant
    • Nursery Assistant
    • Under 5s Playgroup Assistant,
    • Parent/toddler Group Assistant
    • In a range of settings such as:
    • Daycare, créches or a childminder’s own home
  • Work experience

    There is no requirement to for work experience, however it would be beneficial to be able to undertake some work experience as part of the course. In order to do this, you would need to have DBS clearance at a cost of £44.00.

  • English and maths

    There will be no requirement to undertake maths and English as part of this course, however in order to progress in your career in working with children, it is favourable to have GCSEs in maths and English at a 4 or above or the equivalent.
