  • Is this course for you?

    Construction is a booming industry with lots of jobs and career opportunities. The Award in Carpentry will provide you with an introduction to the construction industry after only 12 weeks, 1 evening per week.

    You will be working with experienced staff to learn the traditional, but much sought after trade of carpenter. The college has close links to many construction companies and the training experience within our on-site workshops means that you will use the latest construction tools and materials to gain industry level skills so that you will know exactly what to expect when you start your career.

    We have two locations perfectly located at each end of the A5 making your journey an easy one either by public transport or by your own mode of transport.

  • Required qualifications

    You will need 2 GCSEs at Grade E/2 in maths and English Language or completion of an Entry Level course Gateway into Construction which is a course we also provide or site experience, this will be assessed during interview.

  • What skills will I develop?

    As a carpentry and joinery student you will develop practical skills with underpinning knowledge in a variety of topics. You can expect to study the following units:

    • Health & Safety
    • Produce woodwork joints
  • Careers

    On successful completion of the Carpentry Award, you could be given the opportunity to progress onto the Level 1 Diploma. If you gain employment within the industry, you could become an apprentice, studying for an NVQ in Carpentry & Joinery. The skills you have gained on the Level 1 and at 2 Diploma will benefit you if you choose the apprenticeship route.

    • Foundation Degree Historic Building Conservation
    • Heritage NVQ Level 3
    • Construction Level 4
    • Higher Level Carpentry and Joinery Course (Institute of Carpenters)

    As a South Staffordshire student you will be offered a balanced, high quality study programme to open up your options and give you the best chance of progression into further training opportunities or lasting employment.

  • English and maths

    Additional maths and English qualifications are available, just ask your tutor.

  • Other important information

    Students will need to purchase protective overalls and toe-protective footwear as well as basic stationery. Support is provided through bursary should you need this. Our friendly members of the team will be happy to help.
