  • Is this course for you?

This provision is focussed on young people that aspire to work in land-based industries with an initial insight into the vibrant world of animal care. The programme is a mix of hands on practical and classroom-based theory work and therefore expectations to fulfil both are essential. Our specialist staff have incorporated elements of land-based study into this programme which will inform the young person a wider scope of initial advice and guidance for progression routes into either pathway for land based and/or animal care industries. This includes animal care, wildlife, trees and plants, and growing and harvesting crops.

  • Required qualifications

No formal qualifications are required, but you will have to undergo a selection process with our ‘Head of 14-16 Provision’ to ensure you are both suitable for the programme and registered as ‘Electively Home Educated’.

Attitude, commitment to learning and to attending college fully is required to be considered a place on this programme. A genuine passion for working in a land-based environment and motivation for a career in land based and/or animal care industries is essential.

Attendance is paramount to achieving and to be taken very seriously. Learners that attend less than 90% will have their offer of course placement revoked and removed from programme.

  • What skills will I develop?

    • GCSEs
    • Supported employment
    • Apprenticeship
  • English and maths

GSCE English and maths will be delivered for two three-hour sessions during these three days, so attendance and commitment are essential. English and maths will also be developed as part of the full vocational course content with embedded features.

  • Other important information

All our colleges have a learning platform which can be worked on from home. Parents/carers can also be shown this in the home to see progress and/or any concerns relating to the college programme.

There is an expectation to work from home to complete assessments or homework should any be set.

All units will be individually internally assessed using a range of methods which could include written assignments or tasks such as designing a leaflet or booklet, charts or diagrams or setting up an information board. The qualifications will be pass or refer and all the assessment criteria for the chosen units must be achieved in order to obtain a pass. We conduct most assessments through project-based work as this supports the building and refinement of teamwork, time management and independent creative skills.

Due to age restrictions work experience will not take place on this provision, this will be required upon the young person progressing onto our Level 2 land based or animal care provision. Following onto L2 provision and beyond
