Taster Days at South Staffordshire College, are designed for Year 10 and Year 11 students. They provide students with a fantastic opportunity to find out more about our courses and are an excellent way to help you make a more informed decision about your future.

Throughout the day you will explore the campus, find out about the courses you are interested in, get involved with fun activities during the taster sessions and meet the tutors. If you are not sure of which path to take, why not choose a different session on another day at another campus and compare the two!

Whatever your interests, a taster day can provide you with the opportunity to experience a variety of courses first hand. All subjects will include practical activities, so please make sure you wear suitable clothing and footwear.

    Do you love taking photographs? Whether it’s of concerts, scenery or even a selfie, our photography courses are the perfect opportunity to use these skills to their full potential. Come along a get a snapshot of life at the Lichfield Campus and find out all about the photography course. You will get the opportunity to demonstrate your digital photography skills with a studio shoot and learn about what to look for in developing your own photography portfolio.

  • Art and Design

    If you’re creative, then come along and join our art and design taster course to feel really inspired. Following a tour of our campus, you will get a practical insight into the College’s art and design department. Learn all about our creative arts subjects and enjoy a practical taste of some creative crafts including some time in our ceramics room working with clay.

  • Music

    taster - musicLichfield Campus - Tuesday 20th February

    Our music course will put you on the right track whatever your chosen career within the music industry. Learn how to become a sound engineer, music producer, musician, composer, song writer, DJ or singer. On this exciting taster session you will get a chance to explore the music department’s recording studios and record a drum kit as well as mix a range of audio projects in our MAC labs. You will also get a chance to interact with emerging technologies that include new webcam samplers and band performances.

  • Business

    Business is an exciting course to study as you will learn a variety of topics including leadership, marketing, product promotion, business communication, accountancy, business trends and law. On this taster day you will be given a practical insight into business, marketing and entrepreneurship as well as experiencing a tour of the campus and meeting our tutors. Our exciting business courses will help you gain all of the skills and knowledge needed to become successful within this industry.

  • Animal Care

    Rodbaston Campus - Choose Monday 19th or Tuesday 20th February

    You’ll enjoy a range of activities involving animal health, feeding, behaviour and handling. You must bring along appropriate footwear / clothing such as  wellington boots and overalls.

  • Construction

    Rodbaston Campus - Choose Monday 19th or Tuesday 20th February

    Construction is one of the largest industrial sectors in the country and skilled workers are in high demand. Our courses offer hands-on training to develop skills in plastering, plumbing, carpentry and bricklaying. Enjoy a very practical and exciting hands-on day in the workshops where you will get the opportunity to experience some of the construction trades we have on offer. The day will be split in two and you will spend half the day learning about carpentry and the other half on brickwork. All tools and safety equipment will be provided but you must wear suitable clothing such as overalls/work wear.

  • Equine – A non riding taster

    Rodbaston Campus - Choose Monday 19th or Tuesday 20th February

    Enjoy a tour of all the equine facilities followed by lots of practical activities on the yard and an opportunity to find out more about our courses and the extensive and exciting range of horse related careers that they lead to. Suitable outdoor clothing is required so, it is advisable to wear suitable equine clothing (jodhpurs, boots etc) where possible to ensure you have everything you need for the day.

  • Vet Nursing

    Rodbaston Campus - Choose Monday 19th or Tuesday 20th February

    This day will provide you with an insight into the veterinary nursing profession. You will get a feel for the daily life of a small animal veterinary nurse through a tour of the unit, which will introduce you to both the theory and practical skills required to pursue a career in this exciting sector.

  • Agriculture

    Rodbaston Campus – Monday 19th February

    A very practical day that will offer participants a wide variety of tasks including tractor driving and working with the farm’s livestock. You must bring along appropriate footwear/clothing such as wellington boots and overalls.

  • Motor Vehicle

    Rodbaston Campus – Monday 19th February

    This is a fantastic opportunity to tour our industry equipped motor vehicle workshop and enjoy a broad range of activities. With the guidance from our industry expert and qualified lecturers you’ll get to grips with diagnostic equipment and enjoy activities including a vehicle component quiz, formula 1 style wheel changing challenge, laser 4-wheel alignment, under-bonnet checks and vehicle painting.

  • Countryside/Game and Fisheries

    Rodbaston Campus - Tuesday 20th February

    Enjoy a varied and exciting practical day of countryside , game and fish themed activities. You will get the opportunity to work on the college estate helping to manage habitats and build homes for animals and insects. You will spend time in the college’s fish hatchery which will include a tour and the opportunity to perform fish husbandry tasks alongside our hatchery team of experts. Please wear sturdy footwear and working clothes.

  • Horticulture

    Rodbaston Campus - Tuesday 20th February

    This is a great opportunity to experience life on our college’s busy horticultural unit. You will be able to perfect your landscaping skills by laying slabs, building walls and have the opportunity to attempt some propagation in the glasshouse by taking cuttings, sowing seeds and maintaining plants. Sturdy footwear and working clothes should be worn.

  • Motorsport

    Rodbaston Campus - Tuesday 20th February

    Interested in F1, Motocross, MotoGP or Rally? Rodbaston runs a very unique motorsport course which enables you to learn about general mechanics plus the motorsport industry. Part of the course includes being trained as a marshal and working at local events and also building and scrutineering go karts.

  • Plumbing

    Rodbaston Campus - Tuesday 20th February

    Come and find out all about our plumbing course! This taster session will include a tour of the plumbing facilities and will allow you to find out all about a plumber’s typical working week. Have a go at soldering and bending copper tube as well as cutting and fitting various types of plastic pipe.

  • Floristry

    Rodbaston Campus - Tuesday 20th February

    A practical ‘hands on’ creative day! You will have the opportunity to make and take home simple floral designs for a variety of special occasions. Come along and see what our full time floristry course entails.

  • Landbased Technology (Agricultural Engineering)

    Rodbaston Campus - Tuesday 20th February

    Enjoy a varied and exciting practical day of landbased engineering themed activities. You will get the opportunity to tour and work within our newly refurbished engineering workshop. Activities include carrying out basic safety checks on machinery and performing engine maintenance tasks. Please wear sturdy footwear and working clothes.

  • Catering

    Tamworth Campus – Monday 19th February

    If you’re constantly cooking up inventive new ways to take over the kitchen, then a career in the catering and hospitality industry is for you. Our tutors have extensive experience of working in the industry and have a wealth of knowledge to share with you. Come along to our taster day and find out all about this course and take part in a variety of exciting cooking activities.

  • Childcare and Health & Social Care

    Tamworth Campus – Monday 19th February

    Are you interested in looking after children, young people or adults? Do you want to find out more about a career in the Care sector? Our taster day will give you the opportunity to take part in a range of practical workshops from healthy living, decorating biscuits and messy activities to explore the benefits of creative activities. This is a great hands-on taster day. You’ll even be challenged to beat the bugs!

  • Motor Vehicle

You’ll explore various roles in the public services profession and take part in practical team building tasks and participate in exciting crime scene investigations. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about these rewarding careers.

  • Sport and Sport Science

    Tamworth Campus – Monday 19th February

    Interested in becoming a fitness instructor? Want a taste of the world of a fitness professional? If so, our sports taster day is for you! You will get an insight into the various areas of sport and sports science as well as investigating areas of the fitness industry. You will also discover what it takes to become an instructor or personal trainer through a range of hands-on activities in our on-site gym.

  • Engineering

    Tamworth Campus – Monday 19th February

    Do you want to work in Engineering? Why not join us for a taste of your chosen profession! This is your opportunity to have a hands-on experience of using the industry standard mechanical measuring and marking out equipment, build basic electronic circuits, measure voltage plus much more! Delivered in our purpose built engineering facilities, you will have the chance to use industry specific equipment to draw and design products.

  • Hair and Beauty

    Tamworth Campus – Monday 19th February

    Do you want to work in the hair or beauty industry? Our taster day will give you the opportunity to tour both departments and enjoy a fabulous handson salon experience. Our industry expert staff will introduce you to the theory and practical skills required for our exciting range of hair and beauty courses and help you take the first steps towards your chosen career.

  • IT – Information Technology

    Tamworth Campus – Monday 19th February

    Studying IT can lead to lots of exciting careers so our courses cover everything from web development, games programming, Cisco network engineering, big data analysis, graphic design, computer system architecture and more.   • Electrical Installation

    Torc Campus - Choose Monday 19th or Tuesday 20th February

    This taster day will be split into two elements. The first will be completed in our workshop area, where you’ll have the opportunity to develop your practical skills by clipping and stripping cables and connecting simple circuits and accessories using a range of tools and fixings. The second element will help you gain an insight into what full time college life is really like. You’ll explore the electrical knowledge needed to pursue a career in your chosen profession through a range of fun quizzes and activities.
