Students from South Staffordshire College took part in a training exercise with a difference recently.

The Emergency Services visited the College’s Tamworth campus to show Public Services students how they operate in a major incident situation.
They reconstructed the scene of a multi car pile-up and to make it more realistic students were made up with prosthetic make up to show injuries which the other students had to diagnose and treat.

The students were also responsible for controlling the scene in the role of police, controlling traffic and making sure members of the public were kept away from the scene.
Some students played casualties, whilst others supported the fire officers and even had a go at using the cutting equipment aided by the professionals.
After the event, a fire officer talked students through the process and the whole exercise was recorded for feedback and review sessions.
Andy Mitchell, Public Services Course leader, enjoyed the exercise and said “The students benefited greatly from seeing the services in action and particularly enjoyed having a go on the equipment and asking the serving fire officers questions”.
