South Staffordshire College gardener takes bow after half a Century of service

Bruce Howes has hung up his work tools after 50 years as a gardener on South Staffordshire College’s Rodbaston Campus.

Chief Executive Principal Graham Morley presented Bruce with a painting of Rodbaston Hall to mark the occasion, recalling that three generations of the Howes family had worked there.

His grandfather was the first to find employment at Rodbaston, then his father became a gardener on the 160-hectare property in 1930, and eventually rising to the rank of head gardener. Bruce himself has lived in a house on the estate for over 60 years, from the tender age of 6 months and remains there to this day.

“Everyone at South Staffordshire College sends Bruce their best wishes for a long and happy retirement,” says Graham Morley, “his hard work and long, loyal service have left a lasting legacy in our wonderful grounds.”
