Something is buzzing at South Staffordshire College

The College has established a new training apiary on its Rodbaston Campus and is launching a range of exciting training programmes for beekeepers starting with a Beginners Weekend on the 8th and 9th of May.

There has been resurgence in bee keeping brought about by the global interest in sustainability. People love the idea of collecting and bottling their own honey whilst saving the planet at the same time.  The humble bee has never been as popular as more and more people take up the ancient art of apiculture, that's bee keeping to you and me.

However, Norman Houston, Director of Corporate Development at South Staffordshire College, is quick to point out the need for training and working with experienced bee keepers before embarking on this most rewarding of hobbies.

"Along with enjoyment and reward of keeping bees there is a responsibility to act safety and to maintain the health and welfare of the bees in your care.  Undertaking some basic training is a good starting point as is joining the local beekeeping association to provide ongoing support, both of which should be part of your start up plan.  It doesn't take long with the right advice and guidance to experience the joy of the first jar of your very own honey".

The taster sessions are aimed at beginners and provide the opportunity to experience firsthand the real world of beekeeping. Anyone that enjoys the day can book on the beekeeping courses running over the summer and autumn at Rodbaston campus.

To enrol on one of the taster sessions on Saturday 8th or Sunday 9th May please contact our Cannock Campus for more details on 01543 462200 and ask for Learners Services Team. South Staffordshire College is really buzzing this year.
