This year, the College have increased the number of new apprenticeship starts by more than 100% on the previous year, recruiting for businesses including Friary Shoes in Lichfield, who have recently recruited three new apprentices onto Level 2 qualifications in Customer Service.

The apprentices, Wesley Collins, Deone Luke and Rosie Dawson-Ward all commenced their employment in June.

For Wesley, from Lichfield, this new role is a fantastic opportunity to kick-start his career having previously undertaken a Nu-Futures employability programme offered by Learn by Design who subcontract the provision from APM. The ESF-funded employability scheme, which is designed to help those who are not in education or training gain valuable skills for a successful future, provided the perfect basis for South Staffordshire College to help Wesley secure his new role. Upon hearing about Wesley’s success, Louise Curd, Director of Programmes at Learn by Design said “We are so over the moon for him. Thanks to South Staffordshire College for helping us get Wesley into a positive future.”

Speaking on behalf of the College, Recruitment Officer Ruth Edwards says “I’m delighted that Wesley, Deone and Rosie have secured an apprenticeship role with Friary Shoes, we’ll look forward to seeing each of them progress over the coming months. I’m also delighted that Friary Shoes were so pleased with our service during the recruitment process that they have now decided to recruit a further two apprentices for vacancies at their store in Uttoxeter.”

Tracey Lumb from Friary Shoes adds “We are very much looking forward to continuing to work with South Staffordshire College and embracing the apprenticeship scheme. The College arranged our advert, conducted initial interviews and shortlisted candidates who we interviewed ourselves. The quality of all of the candidates was very high and we’re delighted that we now have three keen learners who are joining the Friary Shoes family. We are looking forward to working with them and the College to develop their skills.”
In addition to Friary Shoes, the College also work alongside businesses including Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club, Lichfield District Council, Redrow Homes and many more.

It is widely recognised that as well as providing a practical route into work, apprenticeships are also extremely valuable to businesses, providing them with fresh, new talent and the scope to equip existing employees with new skills and qualifications. As more and more businesses recruit apprentices, South Staffordshire College’s service, provides a value-added service that provides expert advice and guidance on funding, online and on-campus advertising, first stage interviews with each applicant, shortlisting and arranging face-to-face interviews.
