The Leek County Show has proved a great venue for South Staffordshire College’s Hereford cattle, taking two major trophies home.

The Herefords, based at the College’s Rodbaston campus, are lovingly cared for by students and staff and are shown at many of the County Shows.

Badlingham Blossom 156th (Blossom) won 1st in heifer class and went on to win best female and overall Hereford Champion.

Llancillo Hall Oyster Lass 2nd (Oyster) also triumphed, taking 1st in cow with calf class and reserve female champion to Blossom.

And to top it off, Rodbaston Oyster Lass 2nd (Gladys) also won 1st in calf class, following on from her success in this category at the Nantwich & South Cheshire Show.

After the judging process, Judge Mr J Jackson said when he found out the cattle were owned by the College that both he and his wife were students at Rodbaston (then an independent college) many years ago.

The day finished on a very high note when the College were presented with two trophies – the J Oakes Ash Cup for Best Hereford Female and the Leek Auctions Challenge Cup for Champion Hereford. The parade commentator praised Rodbaston campus for their excellent training of land based students and for supporting the agricultural industry.

A job well done!

Growing construction training centre Chase Tiling Academy, based at the heart of Cannock Chase, is working ever closer with South Staffordshire College to provide members of the public with an opportunity to learn wall and floor tiling and plastering.

Over the last five years, the centre has been growing in reputation and size. In 2008 a working partnership was formed with South Staffordshire College. And students range from school leavers to adult learners. The diploma courses vary in duration from 7 months on wall and floor tiling to 9 months for plastering.

Parv Karg is the Partnership Manager for South Staffordshire College responsible for developing the programme with Chase Tiling Academy. “We work very closely with CTA and it’s a case of continuous improvement; developing and sharing best practice. What this means is excellent achievement and success rates for the learners, also a very friendly environment for them and a real step forward in their career development”.

Apprentices, who are work-based, spend one day a week at CTA and four days with their employer, organised to fit in with their workplace responsibilities.

CTA Director Philip Cockayne enthuses about the positive work ethic that runs through everything they do. “We simulate real working situations as closely as possible”, he says “and we also invite commercial companies in to meet and talk to students, which increases the value of the course to the learners. Our relationship with South Staffordshire College is a vital part of the course content and quality we provide to students”.
