University courses at South Staffordshire College!

South Staffordshire College higher education students come from a variety of backgrounds with a range of reasons to gain awards validated by our partner universities.

Some are students who have already studied with us and wish to progress further; others are those who are currently in employment and wish to progress in their career or move in a different direction; others are simply inspired by the courses and facilities we can offer.

HNC

A full-time Higher National Certificate (HNC) takes one year to complete while a part time HNC takes over two years. Many HNC's cover the same subjects as an HND, however, a HNC is a level below a HND and two below that of a bachelor's degree (generally equivalent to first year of university).

HND

A Higher National Diploma is a unitised course, which once completed can lead to entry on the final year of a Degree course. HND courses are vocational in nature as they prepare you for a career in specific areas of industry. Part time HND courses are generally spread out over a three-year period as opposed to the full time HND course which is taken over two years. Progression upon completion, could be undertaking a top-up degree, or joining the Employment workforce.

Foundation Year

The course helps you to develop the academic knowledge and study skills necessary to be successful on your degree course. If you pass the Foundation Year you can continue onto Year One of your chosen Degree here at SSC or at any other institution.

The Foundation Year currently links to degrees in a wide range of subject areas to provide a route onto your chosen degree course if you don't meet the entry requirements e.g. if you don't have sufficient tariff points or if you haven't studied the specific A2 or AS Level subjects needed for entry to your chosen degree.

Foundation Degree

Foundation degrees are work-based qualifications in a range of vocational areas, equivalent to the first two years of an honours degree. They are often available by either part-time or full-time study. Foundation degrees usually take two years to complete full-time or within three years if studied part-time. All Foundation degrees offer a guaranteed progression route to at least one named honours degree at one of our partner universities. Developed with local employers to meet skills shortages, all Foundation degrees have a substantial amount of work-based learning and assessment including, in some cases, delivery in the workplace, with all students having the support of a work-place mentor.
