  • Is this course for you?

Do you want to work in the Great British countryside….or beyond?

Do you like working outdoors in all weathers and in lots of different habitats? If so, then this course is for you!

The range of job opportunities and employment prospects within the countryside sector is far greater than many people realise.

Studying at the Rodbaston College gives you access to a diverse and vibrant rural estate with a multitude of habitats including woodland, wetland, grassland, ponds, lakes, canal, formal gardens and farmed areas. We are also local to many country parks and areas of outstanding natural beauty such as Cannock Chase, which add an extra dimension to trips and practical sessions.

Practical skills are developed on our estate and help to consolidate the theory that is needed to work and progress in this industry, all backed up and taught by staff who have a wide breadth of experience and knowledge gained in this dynamic and interesting sector.

Taught sessions may start inside the classroom but often break out into the great outdoors and with dedicated practical sessions, skills are developed at a rapid pace to engage and enthuse.

Our links to local and national experts always makes guest lecture time informative and fun, and networking with prospective employers is always a good career move!

  • Required qualifications

To study at level 2 you must have at least 3 GCSE’s graded 3 or above, or equivalent previous qualifications.

  • What skills will I develop?

There is a very strong emphasis on the practical skills that are required to be an effective custodian of the countryside, these vary from using machinery such as strimmers and tractors to experience with power tools and hand tools. This allows students to develop a range of techniques and experience that will allow them to work in a wide variety of habitats and with a wide range of projects – from putting in gates to maintaining ponds and more!

Health and safety is of great importance in the work place and all learners will be able to complete and understand risk assessments and how better to keep themselves and others safe at work.

Time is also spent looking at the variety of organisations that affect the countryside and the skills required to progress into work with them, all underpinned by some basic theory and scientific principles of survey and identification skills.
