  • About us

We have been open as a small, licensed zoo since October 2009, opening at weekends and daily during school holidays to the general public. Our primary function is as a centre to teach high-quality practical animal husbandry and care skills to Rodbaston College’s Animal Care learners during college term times.

From meerkats and marmosets, cockroaches and caiman, we have a diverse and interesting range of animals waiting for you to meet.

With an exciting mix of both the exotic and some more familiar domestic species, there is something for the whole family. Our regular daily programme of keeper talks and animal encounters means that there is a lot of chances to get up close to some of our fantastic animals and have a truly memorable day out.

Come along to visit us, our animals and keepers can’t wait to see you. Have a look at the tabs to see a selection of our animals and a few of our star characters to keep an eye out for here at the Animal Zone.

PJ the Ecuadorian Amazon Parrot
Creature Feature

PJ, Ecuadorian Amazon Parrot, Amazona lilacina

In her younger life, PJ the Ecuadorian Amazon Parrot, Amazona lilacina, was kept as somebody’s pet before being donated to us here at the Animal Zone. PJ was joined here by her partner Duncan in 2014 as part of a European breeding programme. Her mate Duncan hatched at Chester Zoo, before being paired up with PJ in the hope that they breed and help save their species.

The Ecuadorian Amazon Parrot was classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as an Endangered species in 2014 as there were thought to be fewer than 600 individuals left in the wild.

In the wild, Ecuadorian Amazon Parrots are found only in 2 locations within the tropical forests of south west Ecuador. The wild birds in these habitats are still currently under threat from fire, illegal logging and poaching.
